Several weeks ago local food writer Genevieve Rajewski asked if we knew anything about goat meat. “Yes!” we said, and told her about Well Foods Plus, a Bengali market in Union Square that sells goat at a steady clip. Through our ArtsUnion ethnic market tours we have learned that Well Food Plus goats come from a farm in Western Massachusetts. According to Islamic halal law, each goat is given a last meal and blessed by an Iman before being slaughtered. Market owner Jahinger Kabir mentions that their farm has an actual Iman, whereas some farms simply play a tape recording of an Iman giving a blessing. Genevieve, whom we met on a market tour, went to Well Foods Plus and learned much more about goat meat; read her recent Boston Globe article on the subject.
