His Story: born in Saint Thomas, Jamaica, Michael recently moved to Somerville to join his family who reside in the City. His move was spurred by the allure of opportunities offered in the States. His love for food was inspired by the Sunday dinners shared with his grandma and mother every week in Jamaica. Sunday dinners were a time for his family to come together and enjoy good food. After moving to the US, Michael knew he had to learn to cook his favorite meals on his own, it has made him appreciate Jamaican cuisine even more!
In his own words, “putting a dish together is a form of expression”. Cooking has been a form of therapy for Michael and an outlet for him to express himself.
Specialty: Michael’s focus at Nibble Kitchen is to introduce his Jamaican flavors and flair to the Somerville area by serving up tropical smoothies and classic Jamaican dishes with a twist. Michael incorporates fresh ingredients such as mango, papaya, pineapple, and ginger for refreshing concoctions. His menu features famous island favorites such as fall-off-the-bone oxtail and juicy jerk chicken.
Business Dream: East Fruit Smoothies was opened in Jamaica after Michael realized his hometown was missing a refreshing and healthy meal option. His business originally focused on fresh smoothies and juices and expanded to meet demand ever since. He is now incorporating more Jamaican dishes and snacks and dreams of opening his own restaurant someday soon. Through Nibble Kitchen he continues to learn day-to-day kitchen operations, financial management, and new roles like media marketing and event planning.
