The Borges family has you covered at Union Lunch!
Tomorrow Wednesday, Union Lunch is featuring special lasagna from our decades-old favorite Union Square eatery: Neighborhood Restaurant and Bakery. The Portuguese restaurant has been in the neighborhood since 1983, and their family recipes, including flavored pancakes, waffles, and seafood specialties have made a lot of localvores happy since then.
If you haven’t eaten at this restaurant, I recommend that you visit the Plaza for lunch tomorrow. You will not regret it! And if this restaurant is one of your Union Square favorites, don’t miss this opportunity to try a different specialty. Find more information below about the this place, and watch a SCATV video done by Zoe Gregoric about them.

Hours: Daily: 7am–4pm
Owner: Sheila Borges Foley
From: Newark, NJ
Open since: 1983
The Neighborhood Restaurant and Bakery originally opened its doors as a storefront selling baked treats in 1983. Almost 30 years later this family-run business still thrives, serving traditional Portuguese recipes that have followed the Borges family from Portugal to New Jersey and now to Union Square. The Neighborhood’s unique family recipes include homemade jelly, syrups, Portuguese sweet breads, wines, soups and sauces. At breakfast, make sure to order the Papage, a Portuguese cereal similar to Cream of Wheat made with a closely guarded family recipe. For lunch, treat yourself to one of the homemade soups. In the later hours of the day, you can sit in the shade of the patio and drink homemade wine made from the grapes hanging over your head while enjoying one of Sheila Borges Foley’s seafood or linguica plates.
Prices: Breakfast $5 – $12; Lunch $10 -$20
Enjoy the nice weather and catch up with friends
This will be the last Union Lunch, a partnership between US2 and Union Square Main Streets. The series this year has included specials from Casa B, Momo and Curry and other local restaurant. Last week, Carolicious, our Nibble entrepreneurs were the invited chefs. We enjoyed delicious Venezuelan arepas, which had plantains, shredded beef, beans, and cheese! It is a great time to enjoy family and friends, and to catch up with coworkers and neighbors! – by Maria F. Martinez
